World Veterinary Day-25 APRIL 2015

World Veterinary Day was instigated by the World Veterinary Association (WVA) in 2000 to be celebrated annually on the last Saturday of April.

THEME  OF WVD-2015:

VECTOR-BORNE DISEASES WITH A ZOONOTIC POTENTIAL

 Vector-borne zoonotic diseases are becoming a major public health concern in all world regions and are not limited only to tropical and subtropical areas. Changes in Global climate influences the increase of emerging and re-emerging vector-borne diseases and disease outbreaks (e.g. Malaria, Dengue, CCHF, Chikungunya, Filaria, Japanese Encephalitis,(Insects vector ), West-Nile Disease, Kala azar or Leishmaniosis(Sand fly vector ) etc.). Vector-borne zoonotic diseases are an important example of the interdependence that exists between vectors, animal hosts, climate conditions, pathogens, and susceptible human population. Veterinarians are key actors of the One Health Concept at the animal-human-environment interface. Therefore, they play a central role in safeguarding Public Health. Collaboration and coordination between veterinarians and physicians are fundamental to prevent and then treat vector-borne diseases.

· Concerts, public performances, marchs, etc.

 · Media involvement such newspaper articles, radio and television discussion on WVD theme etc.).

 · Seminars and workshops in universities on WVD 2015 theme.

 · Education sessions for public and children on WVD 2015 theme.

· Release studies, statistical data, surveys related to the WVD 2015 theme.

 · Celebrate the works of a notable researcher or veterinarian on WVD 2015 theme.

 · Run workshops and set up booths in the street to inform the general public on WVD 2015 theme.

· Create a website containing general information about WVD 2015 theme.

· Promote activities on WVD 2015 theme through social media.

· Distribution of promotion materials related to WVD 2015 theme.

Vet house calls for pets increasingly popular....

 If people have doctors that make house calls, why isn't there a mobile animal clinic for people who have pets that need some care and/or give their pets shots. .....?

"House-call and mobile veterinarians are gaining in popularity, with more and more practitioners recognizing the value and level of care they can provide to pet owners outside the clinic walls. Providing mobile veterinary services allows veterinarians to provide pet care to pets who get nervous or anxious about leaving the home and visiting the veterinarian’s office. They provide a valuable service to pet owners who for whatever reason — whether it be physical limitations or the lack of transportation — find it difficult to leave the home. Mobile clinics also visit low-income areas in an effort to provide easy-accessible, low-cost veterinary services.

Strongly objects to re-classification of ketamine drug

WVA strongly objects to re-classification of ketamine, as this could lead to ketamine no longer being available to veterinary and medical clinicians, especially in remote areas.

Ketamine is an important drug for anaesthesia in veterinary medicine. It is used for veterinary medical interventions and to restrain dangerous animals. Since it is often the only available, injectable anaesthetic drug, it cannot be missed. The World Veterinary Association (WVA) therefore opposes initiatives to restrict the availability of Ketamine by placing it in Schedule I of the 1971 UN Convention on psychotropic substances. WVA supports the decision of WHO ECDD not to recommend ketamine scheduling.

26 November 2014 "National Milk Day" - Dr Verghese Kurien, Father of India's White Revolution.

For the first time in the history of India's dairy sector, all the dairy majors have joined hands to celebrate November 26 as National Milk Day in the memory Dr Verghese Kurien, Father of India's White Revolution.

The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Indian Dairy Association (IDA) along with around 22 state level milk federation's including Gujarat's own - Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) that markets brand Amul will celebrate National Milk Day this Wednesday- Kurien's 93rd birth anniversary.

AMUL is one of the leading milk producers in the country founded by Kurien. Other than that, similar organisations owned and managed by Kurien includes Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), IRMA and NDDB. Milk powder processed from buffalo milk was the a notable invention by AMUL. Seeing his achievements with AMUL, then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri appointed him as the founder chairman of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in 1965. From 2006 to 2011, he also served as the first Chancellor of the University of Allahabad.

Dr Tapesh Mathur, who has pioneered Krishna Animal Prosthetic Limb / Animal Limb in Cows was invited to share his work at a sensitization workshop organized by Rajasthan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (RAJUVAS). Sharing his journey he said that since he achieved first success in the beginning of the year 2014 at Hingonia Goshala, he has done 7 successful cases at different Goshalas in Rajasthan. He also
said that the method he had used first time was not as effective and environment friendly. The current method and material is not only effective and durable but also uses scientifically approved material. He thanked the experts Dr Anil Jain of Dr PK Sethi Rehabilitation Centre of Jaipur, the pioneers of revolutionary Jaipur Foot (human) technology for guiding him and encouraging in his endeavors with true spirit.
VC Prof Gehlot Appreciates:  
Prof AK Gehlot applauded this exemplary work and innovation. He said that it is a matter of pride that a field Veterinarian from Rajasthan has earned national acclaim by innovating and installing prosthetic limb in animals for the first time successfully. The participants of the workshop included University Professors, government officials, field practitioners, Goushala owners and PG students. Central and State officials from ICAR and Animal Husbandry attended the workshop.

विश्व पशुचिकित्सा दिवस 2014

विश्व पशुचिकित्सा दिवस के अवसर पशुचिकित्सकों ने इन्टास व सुश्रुत संस्था के सहयोग से आज विभिन्न कार्यक्रमों का आयोजन किया. इस मौके पर ग्रामीण पशुचिकित्सा पालीक्लिनिक हिंगोनिआ में मुख्य कार्यक्रम हुआ. पशु चिकित्सकों ने पशु कल्याण और संवर्धन का संकल्प लेते हुए पशु चिकित्सा के क्षेत्र में उल्लेखनीय योगदान के लिए डॉ के. वी. सिंह एवं डॉ.एस. एम.सक्सेना को लाइफ टाइम अचीवमेंट अवार्ड से सम्मानित किया.इस अवसर पर जयपुर के सयुक्त निदेशक डॉ. लाल सिंह , उप निदेशक डॉ. शिवजी राम , राजस्थान वेटरनरी एसोसिएशन की केंद्रीय कार्यकारिणी के महासचिव डॉ. प्रकाश शर्मा सहित अन्य पशुचिकित्सक उपस्थित थे .पशु  चिकित्सा व्यवसाय से जुड़े व्यक्तिओ, स्वयंसेवकों,पशपालको ने मिल कर हिंगोनिआ गौशाला में गायों की देखभाल, चिकित्सा कार्य में सहयोग एवं पानी -चारा खिला कर सेवा सुश्रुषा की. अन्य कार्यक्रम में पशुचिकित्सकों दवरा पांंचबत्ती स्थित पशुचिकित्सा पालीक्लिनिक एवं शहरी क्षेत्र के 16 पशुचिकित्सालयो में नि:शुल्क एंटी रेबीज वैक्सीनेशन शिविरो का आयोजन भी किया गया . शिविरो में 280 से अधिक श्वानों का वैक्सीनेशन किया गया एवं कृमिनाशक औषधिओ के माधयम से उपचार किया गया.

1st Artificial Limb in the Country, Low Cost and Easy to Use, Maneka Gandhi also shows interest  

Dr Tapesh Mathur (Govt Veterinary Doctor, Rajasthan) has been successful in his experiment (20 Feb, 2014) with Prosthetic Limb for Disabled animals after 2 failed attempts in past. He has named it KRISHNA Limb after the name given to the 2 yr old calf who is now enjoying and undergoing physiotherapy using this limb. This calf who had come to Goshala 6 months back (time when he was picked for limb) after an accident and had one of its leg amputated, was otherwise confined to the closet and could hardly move. Now as he undergoes exercise during therapy (2 hrs daily) using the artificial limb, he runs here and there and sometimes it becomes hard to catch hold of him. His (Krishna's) excitement is so overwhelming that he barely mingle up with rest like him and moves amid healthy lot of cows. 

The second success has also come with another Calf of 3 years (with little improvisation on the first one) today at another Goshala (Pijarapol Goshala) and many pet lovers and Goshalas have approached him for the same.  

As per Dr Tapesh these limbs can be used by any animal where its caretaker is ready to bear the responsibility of initial therapy and further care.  

Maneka Gandhi has also seen his work and met him to know the details. He has visited Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre (on 26th Feb) to know about the need of the limb and customize it as per the need and current status of the animal. Doctor Mathur is further researching possibility to have prosthetic limb for above the knee disability in animals.

Global warming led to dwarfism in mammals

WASHINGTON: Mammal body size decreased significantly during at least two ancient global warming events millions of years ago, a new study has found.

A similar outcome is possible in response to human-caused climate change, according to a University of Michigan paleontologist and his colleagues.

Researchers have known for years that mammals such as primates and the groups that include horses and deer became much smaller during a period of warming, called the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), about 55 million years ago.

Now, Philip Gingerich and his colleagues have found evidence that mammalian "dwarfing" also occurred during a separate, smaller global warming event that occurred about 2 million years after the PETM, around 53 million years ago.

"The fact that it happened twice significantly increases our confidence that we're seeing cause and effect, that one interesting response to global warming in the past was a substantial decrease in body size in mammalian species," said Gingerich, a professor of earth and environmental sciences.

Researchers concluded that decreased body size "seems to be a common evolutionary response" by mammals to extreme global warming events, known as hyperthermals, "and thus may be a predictable natural response for some lineages to future global warming."

The PETM lasted about 160,000 years, and global temperatures rose an estimated 9 to 14 degrees Fahrenheit at its peak.

The smaller, later event analysed in the latest study, known as ETM2 (Eocene Thermal Maximum 2), lasted 80,000 to 100,000 years and resulted in a peak temperature increase of about 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

Teeth and jaw fossils of early hoofed mammals and primates that spanned this later climatic event were collected in Wyoming's Bighorn Basin, and the size of molar teeth was used as a proxy for body size.

The researchers found that body size decreased during ETM2, but not as much as the dwarfism seen in PETM fossils.

For example, the study revealed that a lineage of early horses the size of a small dog, called Hyracotherium, experienced a body-size decrease of about 19 per cent during ETM2.

The same horse lineage showed a body-size decrease of about 30 per cent during the PETM. After both events, the animals rebounded to their pre-warming size.

The study was presented at the annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in Los Angeles.

 छठे वेतन आयोग की वेतन विसंगति निवारण और D .A .C . P . की मांग को लेकर उद्योग मैदान पर चल रहा पशु चिकित्सकों का धरना 32 वे दिन भी जारी।  आज सिरोही जिले के 21 पशु चिकित्सक डॉ राजेंदर कुमार पटेल के नेतृत्व में धरने पर बैठे।
राजस्थान पशु चिकित्सक संघ के महासचिव डॉ प्रकाश शर्मा ने राज्य सरकार पशु चिकित्सकों की जायज मांगो पर जानबूझ कर अनदेखी व उपेक्षा करने का आरोप लगाया।  पशु चिकित्सक संघ के प्रदेश अध्यक्ष डॉ लादु राम चाहर ने  बताया कि  पशु चिकित्सकों का शांति पूरक आन्दोलन के बाद भी राज्य सरकार का नकारात्मक रैवैया रहा है इसी के कारण  पशु चिकित्सकों  ने 22 अगस्त  से शुरू होने वाली पशुधन सहायको की परीक्षा का  बायकाट  करने का निर्णय लिया है।  प्रदेश में 58 पशुधन सहायक महाविधालय में होने वाली प्रायोगिक व सेधान्तिक परीक्षा में पशु चिकित्सक भाग नहीं लेंगे। राजस्थान पशु चिकित्सक संघ ने इस संदर्भ में निदेशक पशुपालन विभाग और कुलपति राजस्थान पशु चिकित्सा एवम पशु विज्ञान विश्वविधालय , बीकानेर को सूचित कर दिया गया  है।

स्टेचू सर्किल पर स्थित उद्योग मैदान पर  पशुचिकित्सकों  का धरना 26 वे दिन भी जारी रहा। आज डॉ भवर सिंह के नेतृत्व में झालावाड़ ज़िले के 30  पशुचिकित्सकों  का धरने पर बैठे। राजस्थान पशुचिकित्सक संघ के महासचिव डॉ प्रकाश शर्मा ने बताया कि  संघ की मांगो पर राज्य सरकार की लगातार  अनदेखी के कारण  पशुचिकित्सकों  ने आन्दोलन को तेज करने का निर्णय लिया है। सोमवार से स्टेचू सर्किल पर स्थित उद्योग मैदान पर  पशुचिकित्सकों द्वारा क्रमिक अनशन प्रारम्भ किया जायेगा।  डॉ प्रकाश शर्मा ने बताया कि पशुचिकित्सकों  की वेतन विसंगतियों व  डी ए सी पी  की मांग को लेकर चल रहे इस  आन्दोलन से पूरे प्रदेश में  सेवारत पशुचिकित्सकों के मन  में राज्य सरकार की प्रति रोष की भावना बन रही है,जिसके गंभीर परिणाम सामने आ सकते है.
